The world today is not the same as it was 50 years ago. It’s not even the same as it was 10 years ago, when no one had heard of Facebook or American Idol, and Google was barely a blip on people’s radar. The world changes and it changes quickly. Our goal is to be relevant to the world and faithful to God so that we can reach people in a way that impacts their lives right where they’re at. If you look in the Bible, you’ll see that Jesus went out to the people. He didn’t wait for them to come to him. In fact, He often got into trouble with religious leaders of the time for hanging out with “sinners” instead of “saints”. But, as Jesus reminded them, it’s the sick that need a doctor, not the well (Luke 5:27-32). Our goal is to live that example and be as welcoming, inviting and community-oriented as Christ was 2,000 years ago.
If you come to visit us on a Sunday, be sure to come comfortable! Casual attire is the order of the day at VRL, even from the pulpit. You’ll feel more at home in jeans and a t-shirt than you will in a suit and tie. And don’t be surprised if worship feels more like an experience than a spectator sport. Everything from music selection to order of service is geared to engage your attention.
